TANTEEN, St. George's: Police produced a superb performance to beat Telford Construction TAMCC to win the 2006 St George’s 35 overs Cricket Competition last Saturday at the Tanteen Playing Field. They won the game 16 runs. The lawmen batted first and posted a respectable 181 for from 31 overs playing in sunny conditions. National hopeful Rhondel Baptiste led the way with an attractive half century.

He scored 54 with six fours and received good support from Randal Garcia, who hit 31. There was also 20 from the bat of Leon Chichester. There was a wicket a piece for the former national player Anthony Dixon 7-1-27-1, Clayton Bowen 5-1-23-1, John Olive 7-0-47-1, Otis Lewis 6-0-32-1 and Denroy Lewis 6-0-46-1. TAMCC seemed in with a good chance after opening batsman Dwayne Gill and the talented Cyprian Forsythe posted a half century stand for the second wicket.

But, Gill who scored an elegant looking 48, was spectacularly run out by Denson Narine from a pin-point throw from extra-cover, which shattered the stumps. There were two more run outs as Police tightened their grip on the proceedings. Only Shawn Hackett provided any further resistance with a score of 15. TAMCC needed 28 from the last 3 overs with four wickets in hand and 21 from the last 2. They succumbed under the pressure and were finally dismissed for 165 in 29.3 overs.

Police played unbeaten in the competition, scoring seven victories on their way to the title. They have also chalked up three wins in the 20/20 competition and are hot favourties to also win the event. The team with the likes of former national players skipper Cleveroy Antoine and Dominic Lewis have dominated cricket in the city for the last 15 years. Antoine said that they will continue to prevail for another decade. He paid tribute to the hard work and dedicated of his players over the years.
