ST.GEORGE’s, Grenada: Members of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) have arrested three persons in connection with an offence committed against some Chinese nationals working on the National Stadium at Queen’s Park, St. George’s.
The three young men allegedly threw ‘missiles’ at the Chinese workers at the stadium subsequent to an incident where the young men would have entered the construction area without authorization.
The Chinese have given their commitment to Grenada that they would have the stadium at Queen’s Park ready for the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. Grenada has been awarded the ‘Green Package’ or the opportunity to host a group of Super Eight matches in this historic event. The Chinese have brought in expensive heave duty equipment and have been working vigorously to honor their pledge to Grenadians and dispel some local as well as regional skepticism as to whether the sporting facility will be delivered on time.
Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, has condemned the action of the youngsters at the stadium’s construction site. In one of his village meetings, which was held this week, he informed listeners that some weeks ago, sand was placed in one of the vital pieces of equipment that had to be used for work on the site and more recently, the Chinese workers were stoned. As a result of these unfortunate incidents, a decision has been taken to ‘beef –up’ security at the Queen’s Park construction site.
