Squatting is prohibited but more squatters keep coming

By Davis Joseph (St.Andrew's correspondent)

GRENVILLE, St. Andrew’s: Squatting is on the increase in the Moon Shadow Park district in Grenville, in spite of a ‘No Squatting’ sign which has been erected in the area by the relevant authorities.

Now that there seems to be no additional land for ‘putting down’ any more houses, the roads, once uses by the squatters to get to their homes, are now being use by ‘new’ squatters to erect more buildings.

The Moon Shadow Park now looks unsightly and has become over crowded with squatters who not only build houses for residential purposes but also construct small shops and are engaged in business activities.

Squatting has been a thorn in the flesh of governments in Grenada over the years, especially when squatters have to be moved so that the areas that they occupy can be developed. Many squatters start of with rigidly constructed buildings and as time unfolds itself, many of them proceed to add ‘permanent structures’ to the original building.

As is often the case in most western democracies, opposition politicians usually embrace the opportunities that these situations present to strike a blow against the incumbent political party.

At present, the Government of Grenada is trying to remove squatters who have been occupying prime lands at Mt. Pandy in Belmont, St. Georges. This move is to allow a multi-million dollar project to come on stream. The squatters are not too happy with the move that the government has made and they have received some support from the parliamentary representative for the area, Mrs. Glennis Roberts, who has tried to meet with the Agricultural Minister, Hon. Gregory Bowen to discuss the issue. The Minister disclosed to the public via a press conference last week that the government would be relocating some 40 persons to the Beausejour area.
