GRAND BRAS, St. Andrew’s: Around 8.30 this morning, a vehicular accident, involving a blue car and a jeep, took place close to the junction between Chapel Road and Salisbury Road. The owner of the jeep, a Grenville businessman, rammed into the back of a blue car, driven by a police man from Telescope, as he made his way to work this morning.

The car was badly damaged in the accident while the jeep did not show any serious dents resulting from the impact.

Grenadian Connection (GC) sources indicated that a truck was engaged in making a maneuver at the gap of one of the houses in the area and this may have contributed to the accident. The truck turning in that gap, around a corner in the road, could have caused the policeman to slow down considerably or stop, giving the oncoming jeep very little room to swerve off.

Earlier last week, there was a vehicular accident along the Gladstone Road in Grenville involving a truck and a car. Both vehicles held up the flow of traffic for about one hour while the drivers awaited the arrival of the police. GC is not too sure as to what may have caused that accident. Both vehicles in the same direction at the time of the mishap.

Only recently, officials from the Traffic Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force and the Minister of Communication have expressed their concern over the increased amount of accidents on the nation’s roads. According to them, many of the accidents are due to speeding, carelessness, driving under the influence of alcohol and using cell phones while driving.

To date, approximately 7 persons have lost their lives from vehicle accidents. This figure rivals last year's statistics on road fatalities. As we head into the carnival season, officials in Grenada are making special appeals for drivers to exercise more caution while driving on the nation’s roads.

This morning’s vehicular mishap takes place just about eight hours before the launch of the St.Andrew's carnival, which is carded to take place at the newly renovated Grenville Car Park. The function is expected to attract well over 2,500 persons to the town of Grenville, which is Granada's second largest town.
