GRENVILLE, St.Andrew’s: The launch of St. Andrew’s Carnival, 2006 took place at the newly paved car park in Grenville on Sunday June 4, 2006. During the launch the organizing committee, headed by Peter Bain, awarded three persons from the parish for their outstanding and longstanding contribution to the development of the local culture.
Winston ‘African Teller’ Glasgow received an award in recognition of his contribution to the development of calypso in the country for over 30 years. He has also been instrumental in mentoring young, emerging talents. Ann Stevens, leader of the mass band, Ann and Associates, also received an award for successfully winning two ‘back to back’ kiddies carnival ‘Band of the Year’ titles in 2004 and 2005.
The third awardee was Denis Bridgeman, a member of the Paraclete Mass Band, for his excellent work in costume designing over the past 25 years.
Among the officials on hand for this spectacular launch and to witness these presentations were Minister of Culture, Hon Brenda Hood; Youth Minister, Hon Emmalyn Pierre and Minister of Social Development, Hon Yoland Bain-Horsford.
These awards took place in the presence of a very large crowd of approximately 2000 persons. Many of them came out to get a preview of what the bands and calypsonians have to offer for carnival 2006.
The launch of Grenville Carnival is the third among the parish launches for 2006 carnival. This is a new initiative taken by the Grenada Carnival Committee so as to create an organized build-up and promotion of the Carnival 2006. The theme for Carnival 2006 is ‘August is the time’.
