ST.ANDREW’S CARNIVAL 2K6 LAUNCHED

GRENVILLE, St. Andrew’s: On Sunday June 4, 2006 it was St. Andrew’s turn to officially launch its carnival for 2006. This impressive launch took place in the town of Grenville.

Hundreds of persons came out from as early as 4 pm to listen to the sweet steel pan music and the pulsating sounds of the Tivoli Drummers. They also had the opportunity to witness ‘ole mas’ and ‘jab jab’ masqueraders as they paraded the streets of Grenville.

Other forms of entertainment that were showcased during the night included the La Porterie’s ‘Tamboo Bamboo’, ‘vehkou’, ‘Shortknee’ ‘Jab Jab’, Blue Horizons’ Cow Boys and Birchgrove’s Maypole Dancers.

Calypsonians such as DC Ranks, Torbulous, Tangler, Garry Williams, Mr X, the 2005 Road March and Soca Monarch King, Boogie B and the African Teller performed some of their new songs for 2006. The Queen contestants for the Miss St. Andrew’s Queen Show also made an appearance.

Among the officials present at the launch were the Youth Minister, Hon Emalyn Pierre; Minister of Social Development, Hon Yoland Bain-Horsford; Chairman of Grenada Carnival Committee, Dr Trevor Friday; Director of Carnival, Mr Dexter Mitchell; and Mr Arthur Foster, President of the St. Andrew’s Development Committee.

Approximately 2100 persons converged at the newly paved Grenville Car Park to witness the proceedings. Work on the repaving of the Car Park was only completed late last week.

At 12 midnight, the curtains were drawn and the launch came to an end. Mr X sang the last calypso for the night. This launch was an impressive showing for St.Andrew’s Carnival Development Committee as they get ready for mas in La Bay in just under 2 months time.
