The picturesque village of Mt. Moritz, located on the western side of Spice Island, in the parish of St. George, is known for its very strong community spirit. This spirit has manifested itself, on many occasions, in the excellent organization and superb execution of several events in the area ranging from queen shows to village sports.

Mt. Moritz, like so many other villages in Grenada, was severely battered by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily over the past two years. The people in the area, however, have been working feverishly to try and get their live back to a state of normalcy and maintain the strong unity and harmony that exists in the village. In this regard, the Mt. Moritz’s Community Organization has made a decision to put together its first ever village mas band for this year’s carnival.

The Mt. Motitz’s Village Mas Band was officially launched on Sunday March 05, 2006. Mr. Abel Medford, who is known for his fine organizational skills and Mr. Errol Greaves, who has demonstrated excellent skills in art and wire bending, have spearheaded this bold initiative. Structures are presently being put in place to enable the residents of the village to feel a deep sense of pride over the performance of this mas band when carnival in Spice Island comes around.

The sort of organization taking place in Mt. Moritz is replicated in many other parts of the country. This can be attributed to the Grenada Carnival Development Committee’s new approach to organizing and marketing Grenada’s carnival in 2006. As part of its strategic buildup to carnival on August 14 & 15, the Committee has been launching carnival in many of the parishes throughout the country. Only last week Sunday, carnival was launched in Big Parish, St. Andrew’s.

Many economists in Grenada are of the view that the country looses out on millions of dollars every year because of the inept management and ineffective marketing of Grenada’s biggest international event. The Grenada Carnival Development Committee is without doubt making moves to correct this situation in 2006, and based on what has been taking place throughout the country to date, the committee is definitely on the right track. All indicators seem to suggest that Spice Mas 2006 will be bigger and better than those before. This is one international event in the Caribbean region that should not be missed.
