Carnival 2006 in Grenada will benefit from another innovation.
There will be womens’ calypso and soca monarch competitions this year. The Doll House Theatre in association with the Grenada Carnival Committee, Grenada Carnival and Culture Association and the Grenada Progressive Association of Calypsonians and tents will produce this.

The two monarchs will be crowned at an event scheduled for Saturday 29th July 2006
at a venue to be announced.

The competitions, which are open to all Grenadian female Calypso and Soca
artistes require the performance of one song at each event. Artistes may choose to
participate in either or both competitions but must perform a different song for each event. The same criteria used to determine the National Calypso and Soca Monarch will be utilized in the womens competitions.

Registration forms are available at the GCC secretariat on the Carenage, St. George’s.
Registration closes on Friday 14th July and requires the submission of a CD with the song (s) to be performed. Eight finalists will be selected for each competition.

Dr. Peter Radix, speaking on behalf of the organizers of the competitions, indicated that with the substantial increase in the number of competent female calypso and soca artistes coming to the fore in recent times, it has become necessary to establish these competitions. The competitions are also an effort to enhance the entertainment available during the carnival period, to upgrade the performance skills and increase public appreciation of the talents of women in the calypso and soca art form.

The last womens calypso monarch competition was held in 1998 and was won by Harriette “Pet” Jeremiah.
