ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada: The Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Emergency Relief Programme to Grenada following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan, has ended after almost two years. The US$2.5million Programme, which began in November 2004, concluded at the end of June 2006. A Coordination Unit was set up one month after Hurricane Ivan to manage the components of the programme funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the United States International Development Agency (USAID) and the Technical and Coordination Programme of the FAO.

The Emergency Relief Programme was used primarily to revive the agriculture industry, which is now back on its feet after being ravaged by both hurricanes Ivan and Emily. The poultry, fishing, agro, flower, rabbit and 4-H sectors received assistance with over 4,000 persons benefiting. Over 3,000 farmers are among the beneficiaries. They obtained planting materials, tool and Fertilizers. 450 metric tons of Fertilizers were also provided, most of which were given to the Grenada Cocoa Association.

The main aim of the programme was to assist the government of Grenada in its post disaster relief programme, addressing the needs of the rural population, farmers and fisher folks after the disaster. Fishermen lockers have been repaired at Calliste and Victoria and new lockers have been constructed at Melville Street, Grand Mal and Gouyave. Fish markets have also been refurbished at Gouyave, Duquanse and Waltham. A new communications unit has also been set up at the Melville Street Fishing Complex.

The unit is said to be very crucial to the survival of fishermen especially in times of distress. They are now able to contact land for assistance from a 90 mile radius around the country. 120 fishermen also had their boats repaired or replaced along with of engines, and the provision of fishing gear and safety equipment

The FOA has also been very instrumental in the reconstruction of the Potting Shed at Mirabeau and the replacement of the pipeline bringing water to the area. Despite the closure of the Emergency Programme, the FAO says that it will continue to help in the rebuilding and development of the country.
