G’da Carnival Committee releases list of finalists

GRENADA (August 1, 2006) – President of the Grenada Carnival Committee, Mr. Dexter Mitchell, today released the much-anticipated list of finalists for the various calypso/ soca competitions scheduled to take place later on this month. The information was disseminated to the media at a press conference held in St. George’s.

The Groovy Soca Monarch final is scheduled to take place at the Tanteen Playing Field on Wednesday August 9. The artists who will be competing against each other for the top spot are: Scholar, Sheldon Douglas, Mr. West, Mr. Killa, Croqueta, Mr. Lenz, Luni Sparks & Electrify, Ranking Marvin, Yaga Miser, Soca Elvis, D Hammer, Super P, Elo, Tallpree and Papa Jerry. Soca Sterling, will be the standby.

The National Soca Monarch Finals will be coming up on Friday August 11 at the Tanteen Playing field. The persons selected by the judges to challenge the reigning Soca Monarch king, Boogie B, for his title are: Ajamu, Papa Jerry, Randy Isaac, Chain, Mr. Killa, KJ, Soca Banton, Pupa Leendi, Zingo, Soca Sterling, Mr. West, Tallpree, Frenchy, Lavaman and Garry Williams. Luni Sparks will be the standby.

On Dimanche Gras night, Sunday August 13, reigning Calypso King of Grenada, Scholar, will have to fight hard to fend-off challenges from nine Calypsonians who will be attempting to dethrone him. They are: Black Wizard, Mr. X, Boloti, Teacher Eddie, Sour Serpent, Sherene, Ajamu, Randy Isaac and Biko. Veteran calypsonian, Croqueta, will be the standby for the night.

The GCC is going to great lengths to make this year’s carnival a very memorable one. This year will mark 25 years since the carnival celebration was shifted to the month of August. It is against this background that the GCC has chosen as the theme for this year’s celebrations ‘August is the time!’
