GRENADA (August 10, 2006) – The Media Workers’ Association of Grenada (MWAG) issued a strong condemnation of the brutal and senseless killing of six media workers in neighboring Guyana yesterday. MWAG joined with the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) and other regional media bodies in expressing solidarity to their colleagues in Guyana. The local media association went on to express its deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the murder spree.

On Tuesday August 08, some gunmen in the village of Bagotstown, an area situated about three miles from the capital Georgetown, allegedly began shooting indiscriminately at village residents. One person was killed and about four others were injured in this incident.

A few minutes later, about a mile or so away, some ten gunmen went to the printery of a popular local newspaper, the Kaiteur News, forced the guard to open the gate and then shot him in the neck. He subsequently died. They then proceeded to the printery where they allegedly ordered some five printery workers to lie face down on the ground and shot them through the back of their heads at point blank range. Four of them died instantly.
The Police Commissioner, Mr. Henry Greene, promised that investigators would be conducting a diligent search for those who might be involved in the murders so that they can be brought to justice.
