ST.GEORGE, Grenada - Some of the country’s young and talented cricketers could get the opportunity to improve their game in the world’s largest cricketing nation – India. The Grenada government is keen to capture and nurture the abundance of talent exhibited by several of the nation’s cricketers at the recent Stanford 20/20 Tournament in St John’s, Antigua.

The new Indian High Commissioner, Mr Jogji Singh Sapra, who presented his credentials to Governor General Sir Daniel Williams, discussed training for talented cricketers during a recent visit to Grenada. Prime Minister Mitchell is pushing for local cricketers to train in India and other top cricketing nations to lift their standard.

He is optimistic that some can be trained in India because he said that the response to the idea from the High Commissioner is pretty encouraging. The Indian official said that his government would look into the matter. Cricket is very popular in India with a population of 1.5 billion. India is currently ranked third in both the ICC Test and One-day Cricket Rankings. The local team finished third from 19 countries, which participated at the inaugural Stanford 20/20 Tournament with commendable performances from several young players.

Prime Minister Mitchell is keen to see the likes of fast-bowlers Neilon Pascal and Trevor Walcott, allrounder Ronald Ettienne, Off-spinner Denis George and Wicket-keeper/Batsman Andre Fletcher and other young cricketers develop their skills abroad. Fletcher and George have been selected on the Stanford 20/20 All Star Team to meet South Africa in a US$5million encounter on November 10. Skipper Rawle Lewis and George are also in the Stanford All Star squad.
