By Wallace J.A (Inside Grenada correspondent)
GRENADA – Very soon, Grenadians will no longer be seeing one of the region’s most popular airline coming in at the Point Salines International Airport in St. George’s. The well-known regional and international airline, BWIA, seems to be on its way out of business. These sentiments were recently shared in a statement issued by the beleaguered airline.
It is believed that BWIA will be phased-out and subsequently be replaced by a new airline called Caribbean Airways, which would be operating out of Port of Spain, Trinidad. BWIA has been going through a period of re-organization and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago presently owns approximately 97% of the airline’s shares. The T&T government is believed to have approved a sizeable injection of capital into the creation of the new airline.
The new airline, Caribbean Airways, is expected to take over the routes presently traveled by BWIA. Caribbean Airways will honor all tickets already purchased for travel on BWIA.
Some of the BWIA employees will be getting ‘separation packages’ and will have the chance to apply for positions with the new airline. The airline also made a promise to assist employees with outplacement services to secure new opportunities.
