GRENADA - With several attractive photos among them – “Swimming is good for your heart”, “ A fruit a day keeps the doctor away”, “Nourish your heart with healthy habits” and “Proper diet and daily exercises lead to a healthy heart,” the Calliste Government School won the photo competition put on by the Grenada Heart Project in observance of World Heart Day on Sunday September 24, 2006. The Berean Pre-School finished second.

“How young is your heart”, “Good healthy diet”, “No smoking”, and “Less stress and strain”, were among the creative posters exhibited by second place Berean Pre-School. The Seventh Day Adventist finished third. The Photo competition, contested among 9 schools in the South of the country, was among the highlights of the activities here in observance of “World Heart Day”, commemorated by 100 countries around the world. Chief Judge, Pharmacist Cedric Mitchell, was very impressed with the quality and standard of posters exhibited by the schools.

“I think the kids were on top of what they exactly wanted to do. They certainly understood the message and vividly displayed it in art”, Mitchell remarked. “I think that if at that age we can enforce in our children the message of living healthy, observing healthy practices, eating properly and regular exercises, they will certainly live long and healthy lives”, Mitchell said. A total of some 62 posters were on display. Special prizes were awarded to two posters: one by the Grand Anse Private Academy entitled “I am a young Heart, I can lift the world” and the other by the Calliste Government – “Improper Diet, Unhealthy lifestyle”, “A proper Diet, healthy habit”.

“How young is your Heart” was the theme used to mark the observance of World Hearth Day 2006. A march from the Grand Anse Post Office unto the Camerhogne Park for a mini rally last week Friday was also among the activities marking the occasion. Former Chief Medical Officer, Dr Bert Braithwaite, who spoke on behalf of the government, complimented the students for the productions of what he said were the many wonderful posters. He urged them to live the message they are transmitting so that when they get to around forty of fifty hears old they will be healthy and strong because they would have cultivated a young heart.

He said that the Grenada government, in association with the Grenada Heart Project, will soon be conducting a survey to ascertain whether the sort of care being administered to the heart is appropriate in a an attempt to see how best this can be administered. Heart disease and smoke is the world’s largest killer, claiming the lives of 17.5 million people annually. The World Health Organization says that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet, regular physical activities, can prevent heart attacks and stoke and help the heart age more slowly.
