ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada - It will be the first awards ceremony for a number of years, but it is an activity the Grenada Cricket Association (GCA) hopes to become an annual affair, when it hosts an awards ceremony this weekend Saturday September 30th at South City Plaza in Grand Anse St George’s.

President of the Grenada Cricket Association Kenny Hobson said that the association is proud of the achievements of the national cricket teams and players in recent years. “The teams and players have certainly performed consistently over the years and we think it is only fitting and just to acknowledge the achievements”, Hobson said at a press conference last week in St. George’s.

Cricket officials are hoping to sustain the high interest and momentum being generated in cricket at this time, with a number of Grenadians featuring prominently on the West Indies junior and senior teams, and the Windward Island junior and senior cricket teams. Wicket-keeper/Batsman Junior Murray, All-rounder Rawle Lewis and opening batsman Devon Smith have all represented the West Indies with merit in recent times.

They have also been consistent members of the Windward Islands team for a number of years with several other players. Young wicketkeeper/batsman Andre Fletcher and the much talked about fast bowling sensation in Grenada and the region, Neilon Pascal, have also been members of the West Indies under-19 team, which competed in the 2005 World Youth Tournament in Sri Lanka. “Our achievements over the years have been remarkable”, Hobson said.

Grenada is the defending champion of both the Windward Islands Three-day and One-day Tournament. National teams have also been performing splendidly in the Sir Garfield Sobers Competition in Barbados, which they have won on five occasions. The team finished third in the event earlier this year. Cricketing enthusiast, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, is among the specially invited guests to the award ceremony starting 7 0’clock Saturday evening at South City Plaza.
