GRENVILLE, St.Andrew’s (October 06, 2006) – The staff and students of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) were in a celebratory mood this afternoon after their football team defeated the boys from the Grenville Secondary School four goals to one (4-1) in their opening game of the Republic Bank sponsored Inter Secondary School Football Competition (ISSFC).

The game was played at the Victoria Park, Grenville, and despite the soggy outfield (the result of overnight rain), many spectators - the majority of them being students from both schools - turned out to witness the thrilling encounter.

After the first half, the score was 1-0 in favor of SAASS. During the second half, however, both teams enhanced their performance level on the field which saw GSS finding the back of the net once while the boys from SAASS were able to do so three more times.

The St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary has won the Republic Bank Cup in 2002 and 2003. The competition was not held in 2004 because of the passage of Hurricane Ivan, however, the competition resumed last year (2005) and even though SAASS won the national knock-out competition, they were beaten into second place by St. Mark’s Secondary School (SMSS) after making it all the way through to the finals. The school seems intent on taking back the title from St. Mark’s Secondary this year.

Former national coach, Michael “Niko” Felix, is the present coach of SAASS football team. He is ably assisted by Mr. Donrick Clyne, the team manager (himself a former outstanding footballer) along with other members of the school’s sports department.

The school has an excellent sporting infrastructure in place which serves to identify, nurture and enhance talent. In the area of soccer, the school has produced many excellent footballers like Ashton Henry, Shane Rennie and Kerry Bristow (just to name a few). These three individuals are presently pursuing academic studies in the USA.
