GRENADA (Saturday 07, 2006) – The GNBA (Grenada National Basketball Association) championship is currently into its semi-final stage. The top four teams in the First Division will compete against each other in a one-match final: Police will play St. Paul’s in game 1 at the Carenage, St. George’s today, while Concord will play Twisters tomorrow in Victoria.

The Premier Division is also into its semi-final stage. The top four teams in this division will compete against each other in a best of three series in order to book a place in the finals. Sissons Sparklers of Gouyave will be coming up against Southern Pros of Grand Anse in Victoria on Sunday (tomorrow). This will be the second game on the court for the day (game 2). Young Generations will come up against Carenage United Generations in game 2 on the Carenage Basketball Court on Saturday (today).

Last week Saturday (September 30), Sissons Sparklers and Beacon Insurance Young Generations, two basketball teams that were unbeaten in their preliminary games, clashed on the Carenage Basketball Court. The game was carried live on national radio and television. Sparklers emerged winners, defeating Young Generations 101 – 94.

Persons who viewed the game live on television or at the court located on the Carenage, St. George’s, were pleasantly surprised at the high level of competence displayed by the young Grenadian basketballers. Many persons said it was like looking at an NBA game on television. One thing is certain: the GNBA has done (and is still doing) quite a lot of work in promoting the game throughout the country and helping the youngsters to refine their skills. Many young Grenadians are presently attending colleges in the USA after acquiring scholarships through the GNBA.
