GRENADA – Workers of the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA), who were employed with the association before the year 1999 but lost their jobs as a result of the passage of Hurricane Ivan in September of 2004, on Wednesday received financial assistance from the Grenada Ministry of Agriculture.

A total of some 100 cheques were distributed to eligible GCNA workers in the parishes of St. Mark’s, St. Patrick’s and St. John’s. The Government of Grenada has set aside some EC$830,000.00 for this purpose. It is the hope of government that this money will assist these displaced workers in dealing with the economic challenges they presently face.

Minister of Works and Parliamentary Representative for the Constituency of St. Mark’s, Hon. Clarice Modeste-Curwen, who was present at the handing-over ceremony, encouraged the recipients to utilize the monies they received prudently. She stated that the presentation of the cheques to the workers was a demonstration of Government’s commitment to come to the assistance of the most vulnerable groups in society.

Also present at the ceremony were Minister of Agriculture, Sen. Adrian Mitchell and members of the GCNA hierarchy. Cheques were also handed out to eligible displaced workers in the parish of St.Andrew’s on Friday.
