CATEGORY:OBSERVANCE ------------------------
By Wallace J.A (Inside Grenada correspondent)
GRENADA – For the first time, Child Month would not be celebrated in October as was done in previous years. The month that has been traditionally set aside to focus attention on the children of the nation has been shifted from October to May, 2007.
The Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Kirk Seethahal, stated that the month of October is already saturated with other activities marking other occasions. As a matter of fact, this October has been dubbed Cancer Awareness Month, to draw attention to the serious nature of cancers. There has been an alarming increase in the number of cancer-related deaths and the amount of people diagnosed with cancer in Grenada in recent times.
Apart from October’s designation as Cancer Awareness Month, World Teachers’ Day was celebrated on Thursday October 5. This week has been designated Law Week by the Grenada Bar Association, yesterday (Tuesday October 9) was World Mental Health Day and this Friday will be World Standards Day.
It is primarily against this background that the observation of Child Month has been rescheduled for May next year. This, Mr. Seethahal suggested, would give the children of the nation the attention that they truly and richly deserve.
In talking to some of the nation’s children, Grenadian Connection (GC) learnt that while some of them were nonchalant about the affair, many of them expressed some disappointment since they were looking forward to the various fun activities that they are usually a part of around this time of the year like the wearing of their Child Month jerseys and their ‘trademark’ marches.
