ST. PATRICK’S, Grenada (October 12,2006) - According to the latest reports reaching Grenadian Connection (GC), there has been a possible double murder in the rural village of Mt. Rich, St. Patrick’s, this afternoon sometime after 3pm.

Unconfirmed reports from the area seem to indicate that a mentally deranged man in possession of a cutlass allegedly committed the murders. One of the persons who tragically lost his life is said to be a farm worker and the other is a man (known as Dummy) who was walking the street. Residents in the area claim that earlier on during the day the ‘mad man’ would have wounded someone with his cutlass. This victim is currently hospitalized and is said to be in a critical condition.

The Grenadian policemen are presently looking for the culprit. He is said to be dark in complexion and is of medium build. Residents in the area have said that the ‘deranged man’ is originally from ‘somewhere in the St. Andrew’s area’ but has been frequently seen in the Snell Hall area.

The people in the Snell Hall and Mt. Rich areas are said to be visibly shaken-up by these tragic events and are no doubt hoping, like people in the other parts of the island, that the perpetrator of these shocking murders is captured as quickly as possible before he commits other criminal act.

Only about one year ago, policemen were able to capture a mentally disturbed man from the La Digue area after he killed his estranged girlfriend.

Ironically, on Tuesday of this week (October 10), Grenada observed World Mental Health Day. The focus this year was on 'Building Awareness -- Reducing Risk: Mental Illness and Suicide'. This focus calls attention to suicide as a leading cause of premature and preventable death. This is because the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the need to build awareness and reduce risks in the areas of suicide and, more broadly, mental illness.
