VICTORIA PARK, Grenville (October 13, 2006) – Two matches were played at the Victoria Park this afternoon in the Republic Bank sponsored Inter-secondary School Football Competition. The first was a junior game between the St. David’s Christian Secondary School (SDCSS) and the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) and the second involved the senior teams from both schools.

In the junior division, SAASS defeated the boys from SDCSS 6-1 while in the second (senior) game, SAASS again emerged victorious with a score line of 7-0. In both matches, the boys from SAASS looked indomitable and were able to easily outplay their opponents.

Earlier on this week, SAASS played newcomers, Grenville Christian Academy, at the same venue and in that game, they sent a clear warning to the other teams in the competition that they intend to reclaim the Republic Cup title this year from last years champion, the St. Mark’s Secondary School (SMSS). They practically demolished their opponents 15-1.

The SAASS team trains very hard under the experienced coach Michael “Niko” Felix, a former national football coach. SAASS won the Republic Cup in football in 2002 and 2003. Because of Hurricane Ivan, the competition was not played in 2004, but when it resumed in 2005, SAASS lost to SMSS in a closely contested final match.

Although it is possible for any team participating in the competition to win the Republic Cup, the two favorite teams to play in the finals this year seem to be SAASS and SMSS.
