ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada - The Grenada National Coalition on the Rights of the Child will be observing a week of activities from October 15 to 20 to commemorate its 13th anniversary.

The week of activities will be executed under the theme “Raising children in a changing world.” The objective of the week is to review traditional approaches in raising children by endorsing the best examples while at the same time adopting new measures. Special focus will be on HIV/AIDS as a social problem and Youth Violence, Delinquency and Substance abuse, with a view to finding satisfactory interventions.

The members of the Coalition will be using the week to inform the general public about its achievements while at the same time explaining the Rights and Responsibilities for both children and parents as outlined in United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which Grenada signed in 1992.

The week will open with a radio and television address by Hon Yolande Bain-Horsford, Minister for Social Development and close with an address by Hon Claris Charles, Minister for Education.

Other activities are: October 17 – Appearance on the GBN television Tuesday night Programme “The Impact of AIDS” where the Topic will be “Confronting the HIV/AIDS challenge: the missing face of Children”.

October 17th – (in the morning) Special Session for current and former members where the keynote address will be delivered by a UNICEF representative from the Barbados office.


October 18 –Members will be visiting schools to talk on the theme and provide a better understanding of the National Child Abuse Protocol and Youth Violence

October 19 – Members continue to visits.

Throughout the week members will be participating in radio programmes sharing information about the Coalition and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
