CITATION:CATEGORY 3 (CRAFT)

RECIPIENT: MRS. SUELIN LOW CHEW TUNG

Ms. Suelin Low chew tung – Strongly Advocates the Use of Standard in the Craft Industry

Ms. Low chew tung is an artist and pharmacist by profession. Even though she has only started working with the Bureau for just close to a year, she has been advocating the use of standard to improve the quality of craft produced in that industry. The award is given based on the following:

1. USAID Sponsored Craft Fair of 2005 – in November of 2005 Ms. Low chew tung coordinated the Craft Fair and was instrumental in getting the Bureau involved. She invited the Bureau to inspect and critique the craft items on display. She also invited us to present our findings to the planning committee.

2. Certification Program for Craft industry – Ms. Low chew tung also approached the Bureau on developing a certification program for the Craft Industry. She continues to lobby for that program.

3. Taking the Lead in Sourcing Standards that can be used by the Craft Industry – Suelin wanted copies of craft standard that can be used. We only had one standard available at the Bureau, that was the standard for Spice Packages. She went ahead, searched and found copies of Craft Standard from the Canada Craft Council which she committed to share with the bureau.

4. Alternative Packages using Waste Paper – Suelin went ahead and develop a community project using waste paper to package spices and other gift items. She came to us with the product because she wanted our input from a standards perspective as to the quality of the final product. She was also concerned about the food safety of mould retardant used to make the packages.

5. Work done on the National Export Strategy for Craft Sector – Suelin was a member of the sector team for that strategy. The strategy strongly advocated the use of standard to improve the quality of craft produced and sold in Grenada.

The Bureau congratulates Suelin and look forward to continue working with her to promote the use of standards in the craft industry.
