By Trevor Thwaites Inside Grenada correspondent Monday October 23, 2006
ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada - Security Minister, Senator Einstein Louison, described the occasion as ‘historic’ because he said that since the tragic events of October 19, 1983, they have been trying to preserve and protect the name of Maurice Bishop and those who were murdered with him.
According to Senator Louison, “Despite being few in numbers here, we are very clear that we represent the majority of the Grenadian people. We are very clear that by unveiling this monument for one of the greatest sons the country has ever produced, we are doing the right thing,” he remarked.
The unveiling of the sign for the “Maurice Bishop Highway”, comes 23 years, after the former Prime Minister and his colleagues, were brutally murdered in a coup de etat within the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG).
Senator Louison is hopeful that the unveiling of the sign, will help to unite the Grenadian people, who have been terribly divided by the tragic events of October 1983. He called on his fellowmen to unite for the betterment of the country. “Today we are striving to build back Grenada better after the recent disasters. Unveiling this monument today for one of our national heroes is so timely and important for our people”, Senator Louison commented.
While the naming of the highway after Maurice Bishop was received as great news by some persons in the country, many Grenadians have expressed the opinion that they would have preferred if the Point Salines International Airport had been renamed after the slain hero instead of the highway leading towards the airport.
