THE CONSTANTINE Methodist Church in Grenada, which was demolished during the passage of Hurricane Ivan, has received support for its rebuilding efforts from well-wishers in New York.
On Saturday, October 21, 2006, the Constantine Methodist Church Rebuilding Committee of New York, chaired by Derek Ventour and Mrs. Constance Joseph, hosted a tea party and entertainment at the Union United Methodist Church in Brooklyn New York, pastored by Grenadian Rev. Wesley Daniel.
Many Grenadians and friends attended the event and were treated to poetry reading by Anthony Wendell DeRiggs, performance by New York Independence Calypso Monarch “Quako”, music by Ozone One Band and an assortment of baked goods, reminiscent of old-time tea-parties in Grenada.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations, HE Ruth Elizabeth Rouse, brought greetings and encouraged those assembled to continue their support for the rebuilding of their homeland. The Ambassador also highly commended the organizing committee for their dedication and sterling effort.
“Grenada Will Rise Again” was the theme running through the evening’s proceedings, in the musical selections and the messages brought forth by former Methodist Minister at Constantine, Rev. Allan Kirton and Rev. Wesley Daniel, respectively. The event was supported by Air Jamaica, Grenada Board of Tourism, Conrad’s Bakery, Back Home Bakery, Labay Market, Compass Shipping, Gem Holiday Beach Resort, and Bamboo Garden Restaurant.
Since the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the Diaspora in New York has given support to numerous fund-raising efforts to rebuild the Spice Isle.
