Association of Caribbean Media Workers Trinidad, WEST INDIES
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada, CMC – The Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) Tuesday said there had been overwhelming response to its first ever “Media Award” scheduled for December 2.
MWAG said that it had received entries for the radio, television and print categories and that all submissions would be sent to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago for judging by a select panel chosen by the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM), the regional media organization.
MWAG said that local journalists would compete in various categories including Best News Story, Best Feature/Documentary, and Best Stories in agriculture, business, tourism and sports.
MWAG’s first Vice President, Rawle Titus, said he was encouraged by the number of entries from the local media houses.
"We have seen evidence of development and we would like to think that that trend will continue" Titus said, indicating that several radio and television stations were now providing daily news bulletins.
"It would strengthen the media because it has implications for an independent press as well as press freedom in Grenada so those words I echo and I know my president, Michael Bascombe, would identify with them" Titus said.
MWAG recently signed a partnership agreement with Cable and Wireless in relation to the awards and Anselm Mathurin, Vice President of Retail and Sales at the British-owned telecommunication company, said he was pleased with the relationship.
"Our work cannot be done without the assistance of the media houses in Grenada. I can say that over the last 12 months or so we have had a very productive relationship," he added.
