ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada - One would have remembered the days when local football brought fervor, pride, excitement and glory to the hearts of footballers and the fans alike. Such scenes were quite obvious yesterday at Tanteen when scores of supporters chanted and wave flags as Carib Hurricane fought hard to win the 2006 DIGICEL Premier League.

Although Glenelg Spring Water GBSS was only playing for sheer pride, they were a number of flashes of brilliance in their attack. It was Carib Hurricane who demonstrated more determination and grit, however, scoring their first goal late in the first half and then extending the lead with ten (10) minutes before the final whistle.

Then it was ‘bacchanal time’ for the fans as the journey back to St. Mark’s in a motorcade fashion, declaring to all and sundry that they are the champs. They finished the League on 38 points.

While Hurricane was enjoying the lead at Tanteen, Queens Park Rangers was hoping to hear differently as they also took a first half lead against Hard Rock at Queens Park. They won the encounter 1-0 and finished second; only one point behind Hurricane.

Eight (8) goals were scored in the match between D’Sports Morne Jaloux and Springs at Morne Rouge. Although Morne Jaloux won 5-3, their faith will be decided when Fontenoy United and Police meet later on this week.

What might be considered unimaginable is the fact that this team started the second round on three (3) points and has finished the league on 23 points. Dano Eagles Super Strikers won emphatically over defending Champions ASOMS Paradise at Fond. The 3-0 victory put them in the fifth (5) spot.

Now the teams will by looking forward to the riveting GFA Open Knock out Tournament which will run throughout this month.
