DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEKEND

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada - The Ministry of Social Development, along with other allied groups in the country, has set aside Saturday November 25 and Sunday November 26, 2006 as days to highlight violence against women as well as sexual abuse and sexual harassment against women, especially in the workplace.

The president of the Grenada National Organization of Women, Ms. Elaine McQueen, has extended an invitation to all Grenadians to turn out in the town of St.George on Saturday to participate in a march through the town to demonstrate their displeasure with these reprehensible social ills.

On Sunday November 26, a mass rally will be held at the Fond Playing Field in the parish of St.Patrick to bring the curtains down on the awareness campaign. It is anticipated that many men would be part of the large turnout on both days since a growing number of men in the country have been speaking out against all forms of domestic violence.

Women who are victims of these unseemly acts are encouraged to report these cases to the relevant authorities and not endure the humiliating treatment, as is frequently the case. Men, on the other hand, are encouraged to treat their women with respect and refrain from using violence against them. These were the sentiments shared by some of the persons who spoke to Grenadianconnection.
