TELESCOPE, St. Andrew’s – The male teachers of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) took on the might of the school’s football team at the SAASS Playing Field on Friday December 01, 2006.

Despite the heavy intermittent rainfall and a soggy outfield, the game lived up to all expectations. It was packed with excitement from the first touch of the ball until the end. The remainder of the teaching staff, along with students of the school, looked on at the game in a highly animated mood.

Throughout the game, there were flashes of brilliance from some of the SAASS teachers, many of whom were former sportsmen. Former national coach, Michael “Niko” Felix led the charge for the staff. He was capably assisted by Donrick Clyne, Stevie Ranger, Lydon Lewis, Lyndon St.Cyr, Evans Coutain and some of the more recent members to the teaching fraternity like Tery Alexander, Jervis Dabreo and Cheddi Charles among others.

The team representing the student body comprised of players who represented the school in the recently concluded Republic Bank Cup soccer tournament. They were able to narrowly clinch victory from the staff, winning the game by the razor-thin margin of 6-5.

The St. Andrew’s Anglican secondary School (SAASS) is the oldest secondary co-educational institution on the island. It currently provides a qualitatively high, well-rounded education to almost 700 of the nation’s children – many of them coming from low-income families.

The school has been performing excellently in the academic as well as in the sporting realms. Over the years, SAASS has consistently produced students who have performed outstandingly in the CXC/ C-sec examinations, for example, Leon Abel, Kinnard Blache, Kaydeonne Ellis and Cornelius Joseph, just to name a few. These students ranked among the top performers in the nation, obtaining more than 10 passes. The school has also produced some of the big names in all forms of sporting pursuits like Alleyne Francique, Randy Lewis, Trish Bartholomew, Shane Rennie, Dennison Thomas, Wesley “Batie” Thomas among others.

The school boasts of having well-structured academic, cultural and sporting programmes. Only recently, an inter-house debate competition was held. This week, there will be inter-form singing and inter-house literary competitions.

In all sporting competitions held in the school, the staff has always challenged the winning teams. This has contributed significantly towards fostering good relations between the teaching staff and the students. These activities have also helped in maintaining the unique SAASS ethos.
