ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – Senator Emmalin Pierre, the Minister of Youth in Grenada, will this Saturday (December 9, 2006) receive an award in recognition of her outstanding work and achievements, from a New York based women’s group.

Senator Pierre, who is widely expected to contest the St. Andrew South-east seat for the ruling New National Party (NNP) in the next general election, was sworn in as a full-fledged minister at the Governor General’s residence on January 14 of this year. The present parliamentary representative for the constituency is Hon. Kenrick Fullerton from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Her appointment to the post of minister did not go down too well with some opposition parliamentarians along with a cross-section of the Grenadian population, who felt that the additional expenditure that accompanied such a promotion was unnecessary, especially at a time when the country was in recovery mode having survived two recent hurricanes. The ruling administration, however, insisted that the appointment was necessary given government’s commitment to developing the youth of the country.

Since her appointment as Youth Minister, Senator Pierre has been working very conscientiously throughout the country to render assistance to the young people and create employment opportunities for quite a few of them. The emphasis has not only been on employment creation but also on young people trying to upgrade themselves in various vocational and technical fields. She is at present one of the youngest and most popular politicians in the country .
