CATEGORY:COURT RULING --------------------------

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Parliamentary Representative for the town of St. George, Hon Peter David, won his fourth legal case against the Government last Tuesday. The court awarded David a further EC$5000.00 in costs, bringing the grand tally up to EC$18,000.00.
The Government, through its legal representative, Hugh Wildman, has been trying to challenge David’s dual citizenship status which it thinks should have disqualified him from standing for General elections in Grenada.
At the last general election in Grenada, Peter David from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ran for the Town of St. George seat and defeated the New National Party’s (NNP) candidate for the area (the incumbent Brenda Hood). Since then, concerns were constantly been raised about David’s Canadian citizenship and attempts were made by the ruling party to have him removed as the representative for the constituency in parliament.
The lawyer who heads the legal team for Hon Peter David, constitutional expert Dr. Francis Alexis, suggested that the Government lost its case as a consequence of its legal representative, Mr. Hugh Wildman’s failure to follow procedures that are laid down in Civil Procedure rules.
Some time ago, both Hugh Wildman and Peter David were claiming victory in a court ruling. Mr. Wildman went on to suggest that Peter David and his legal team should be shaking in their boots because he had a surprise in store for them later on during the year.
Peter David’s legal team has raised concerns about the amount of money that has been spent on the case so far. This is the fourth victory that David has had to date and he has been awarded costs amounting to $18,000.00, money that would have to be paid by the taxpayers of the country.
The representative for St. George went on to state that the authorities should show some sanity and bring some closure to the matter. In the meantime, he stated unequivocally that he would continue to represent the people who elected him as their representative in 2003 and he was confident that they would do so again.
