SIR JONH CAMPTON, who led St. Lucia for some twenty-nine years – first from 1964 to 1979 and then from 1982 to 1996 – came out of political retirement last year to lead his opposition party (the United Workers’ Party) all the way to the seat of government on the island known as The Helen of the West.

Sir John Campton (who at age 81 has proven to everyone that age is just a number) and his UWP were able to capture 11 of the 17 seats in the St. Lucia’s House of Assembly, while Dr. Kenny Anthony and his St.Lucia Labour Party (SLP) – having spent two straight terms in office – only captured 6 seats.

The UWPs victory at the polls should come as a shock to many of the opinion pollsters since the statistics they compiled prior to the elections favored Dr. Kenneth Anthony and his SLP to win. Sir John Campton, however, has revealed to the press that he was always confident of victory.

Sir Campton had made the rising crime rate in St. Lucia one of the major issues during his election campaign, and he said that he intends to let the criminals know that there is no place for them in his country.

Outgoing prime minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony, who has already congratulated Sir Campton on his victory, has stated that the new administration would have a hard task ahead of it in trying to heal the wounds that were inflicted on members from both parties during a bitter campaign leading up to the elections.
