On April 24th, 1953 the population of Mt. Rose, St. Patrick in Grenada increased by one with the birth of Austin Calliste, another bouncing baby boy born to George (deceased) and Gertrude Calliste.
Austin was affectionately known as ‘Poor Boy’ a name he inherited from the family’s donkey. The donkey’s name was Poor Boy and he would only allow Austin to ride him. Though only a boy, Poor Boy became Austin’s donkey and the villagers rechristened Austin, from Austin to Poor Boy.
He attended the Mt. Rose Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School. He was always an adventurous boy and it was not surprising that at an early age he obtained his driver’s license, which began his career as a driver of cars and trucks.
He was a free willed, free spirited person who allowed nothing in life to easily bother him. Jovial in nature he was a people’s person, he made friends with all, from the smallest child to the most senior adult.
In 2007 he migrated to the United States where a new land with new opportunities expanded his dreams and he took pride in his job. October 6, 2011, began for him as a regular Thursday. He threw on his backpack and left home for work but became ill. On October 31, 2011 the population of New Jersey and the USA decreased by one, as Poor Boy departed this life.
He leaves to mourn his mother Gertrude; son Don; daughter-in-law Carrie; grand-daughter Kayla; brothers: Trevor, Crafton, Jimmy, Winston and Martin; sisters: Shirma, Yvonne and Margaret; one uncle; four aunts; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We give thanks to God for the life He loaned to Poor Boy.
