Special Info  Betty Bernard, affectionately known as “BB,” was born on November 6, 1947, to Anitha & Tobias in St. Andrews, Grenada, WI. She was the baby of six children: Joyce, Shirley, Rudolph, Grenade, Matthias, and John. Betty was from a tight-knit family. She was the vibrant rambunctious one of the group and often the life of the party everywhere she went. BB loved to dance, move, and show the world what she could do. She became a ballet dancer and danced in many shows. She completed her formal education at St. Mary’s RC in Grenada and started her family. She had two children, her son Devon, now deceased, and her daughter Jossyan. After her son’s death, BB sought out opportunities to provide a life of opportunities for her daughter. That opportunity came when her sister Joyce invited her to join her in the United States of America. Betty migrated to the States in 1980 and lived with Joyce for a few years until planting her roots in the Caribbean-centric Flatbush area of Brooklyn, New York. By the mid-80’s she brought her daughter to the States and later welcomed her first grandchild, Kristopher in 1985. Being a performer made her very comfortable in a crowd. She had a charismatic personality and people loved to speak and interact with her. This made establishing herself as a Customer Service Engineer, at Restaurant Associates within Deutsche Bank, very easy. She was very skilled in speaking with people and making them feel valued and cared for. It was the “grandmother effect” that made you feel comfortable. BB worked at Restaurant Associates for over 25 years; during that time, she experienced first-hand the trauma of September 11, 2001 while working across the street from the World Trade Center. As many did, she walked home from the site, over the Brooklyn Bridge, covered in ash, to her grandson. This tragic event didn’t stop her from living or giving back to people. One of her proudest moments was becoming a United States citizen in 2000. She studied relentlessly for months and was overjoyed to pass the exam, allowing her to gain her citizenship. Her love for children also drove her to obtain her licensed to run a daycare facility. The only thing that slowed her down was a stroke in late 2018. She was hospitalized for a month; she lost her mobility on the left side of her body, and dementia started to take its toll. From mid-2019, she resided in a nursing home but when asked, “How are you feeling?” she would say, “Taking it one day at a time”. BB’s health worsened and on January 24t, 2022, she took her last breath and is now no longer in pain, God granted her wish to not suffer and laid her to sleep.
