Details:

Glen Christopher Bartholomew was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago on December 17, 1955 to Alma A. O’Neil née Williams and Knaggs Bartholomew. Although Glen had the misfortune of losing his father around the age of two, he and his mother continued on, as well as his paternal brother, Sonny.

Around the age of nine, he made many trips to the library to read complex electrician manuals, which shocked the librarian. By the age of 12, he began building tube amplifiers and sub-woofers, and shortly thereafter started DJing. He enjoyed sewing his own clothes during his teens and spent a short time as a tailor.

Glen attended Woodbrook Government Secondary School and participated in many cycling competitions. He loved cycling so much that unbeknownst to his mother, he would ride from Belmont to Piarco Airport roundabout and back (roughly 27 miles) on a regular basis. He would talk about how dark the ride back was at night and how he would piggyback off of trucks for light. He eventually graduated class of ’72 and worked as a typesetter and proofreader for The Trinidad Guardian Newspaper.

He had an immense passion for music, which his friends Tony, Lincoln, Harold, Noel, Malcolm, Denley, and Michael, knew well. You can ask them how meticulous he was about handling his 45 and LP records. If you had dirty hands or held them incorrectly, he did not hesitate to correct and show you the proper way to handle them.

A new neighbor moved in next door. Originally from Grenada, she migrated to Trinidad to live with her grandmother. Once there, they moved from St. James to Belmont. When he saw Deslina, his eyes caught “fire.” His mother could tell that he was smitten (from the many times she caught him peeking from the window). He went by the name “DJ Electro Soul” where he sported his homemade amplifiers and sub-woofers; carrying them to each party he played. Knowing Deslina was always with her cousins, with the hope that she would attend, he invited them to his parties – and that’s when and how their courtship began.

Glen wrote to Deslina’s father (who was living in the United States) for her hand in marriage and once he approved, proposed to Deslina in 1980 (she said yes!). Glen moved to Brooklyn, New York, to be with his fiancé in 1981, and in September of that year they were married. Nine months later, they had their honeymoon baby, Kimberly. He also put his sewing talents to work during his wife’s pregnancy by making her smock dresses, which she proudly wore to work and everywhere.

He attended and graduated as valedictorian from Taylor Business Institute (TBI) with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. Shortly after, he started working for NYNEX Corporation as Records Administrator, where he spent over 3 years. After leaving NYNEX, he was hired as Supervisor, Records Management & Systems for the State of NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). In his spare time he continued biking around the five boroughs, loved building electrical equipment, shared DIY schematics and tips through forums, and subscribed to music and electronics magazines. Oftentimes, he would sell some of the electrical equipment that he built while people sought him out on the forums for advice.

In 1987, Glen and Deslina had their second daughter, Keli. A few years later they moved their family to their permanent residence in the Mill Basin area of Brooklyn. He was promoted to Corporate Records Manager in 1997. This year would have marked over 28 years of service with MTA.

He leaves behind his wife, Deslina, two daughters, Kimberly and Keli; grandchildren, Bryon, Brandon, and Christina. He had a special place in his heart for his cousins, Sheila Bocage and the rest of the Bocage family; Christopher Barrow and Genevieve Mendez and the Barrow/Mendez family; Bethina Crick and family; Ingrid Jackman and family. His additional family members will miss him: the Aguilera, Bartholomew, Hylegar, Joseph, Julian, Rodriguez, and Williams families. He will also remain in the hearts of his mother-in-law, Agnes “Wilda” John, sisters-in-law, Marelyn John-Clarke and family, Gloria & Carol Mark and family, brothers-in-law, Andy John, Christopher Cyrus, and Webster Walker-John, son-in-law, James Trisvan, the John family (in Grenada & USA), the Alexander and Wellington families; MTA co-workers, and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
